Planning for the Other 99%

Jason S. Ornduff

Harrison LLP

____________

Here on the North Shore, one of the wealthiest areas of the nation, we often lose sight that most people we know will never have to navigate estate taxes at either the federal or state level. Indeed, the average wealth of a retiree in America is $333,940 in retirement funds and a total net worth of $1.06 million (2022 Survey of Consumer Finances (SCF)). But those Americans need estate planning too.

Jason Ornduff’s presentation will focus on that majority with a discussion of some of the practical estate planning techniques available that don’t require complex tax strategies. An estate plan not done right, even one of modest size, can lead to massive complexity in estate administration and even worse, family disputes that assure that only the litigators are the winners.

Jason Ornduff

Partner, Member of Executive Board - Harrison LLP

Jason Ornduff advises high-net-worth families, business owners, executives, professionals, and celebrities on state and federal laws regarding wealth transfer to the next generation, including estate planning, estate and trust administration, and estate and gift tax issues.

Jason also counsels closely held companies on various legal issues, especially in the areas of succession planning.

Jason’s practice has evolved from being a transactional attorney to a trusted advisor for his clients. Many of his clients are multiple generations of the same family, and many have been with him for several decades. Jason takes a practical approach to law – the technical aspects and strategies should be secondary to the overall goals of the client, and solutions to problems must be understandable to and sustainable for clients.

Jason is a past president of the Greater North Shore Estate and Financial Planning Council. He is also a Fellow in the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel (ACTEC), serves on the Illinois Institute of Continuing Legal Education’s Estate Planning Short Course planning board, and is a member of the Chicago Estate Planning Council.

Outside of the practice of law, Jason is active in Scouting, having served as a Scoutmaster for six years and currently advising a Venture Crew comprised of teenage Scouts. He has backpacked various back country trails throughout the country. Jason also has been active in youth sports, having coach youth lacrosse, basketball, and soccer.
